*groan*

I cannot win the Battle With Clutter that rages in every corner (and on the couches and on the counter) of my stupid apartment! I try to be so good but I don't win... and not to be wholly ungrateful, but the wedding presents Do Not Help (except, okay, the cool trash can; that helps). And we're having dinner guests over tonight... unfortunately all my prep time for that was taken by pre-making the dessert and reducing the dishes from disaster level to slightly nasty. I'm gonna do my best to get rid of some more stuff this weekend (old things and clothes), but the real problem is our place. Whoever heard of a 2-bedroom place that has a kitchen with two drawers?? If we don't manage to move into a place with far more storage space, and soon, I shall surely go batshit.

Oh well. Here is the cool dessert I made: you take oranges, the thick-skinned kind but preferably not navel, and you cut a small slice off the base so they can sit solidly upright. Now, take a paring knife and cut through just the skin, starting at the top and ending about 1/2 inch from the bottom, so that when done you have cut it into eight "petals." Carefully, peel the petals away from the orange one at a time, then work your hand inside the peel and work around the ball of the orange until you can lift the whole thing out. The peel is still all in one piece and looks like a flower. Now fill the peel with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream and a scoop of orange sherbet, squeeze the peel closed again so the orange almost looks whole, give it a quick rinse to get rid of the sherbet that is doubtless oozing from the cracks, and put it in the freezer on the piece of waxed paper you put there before you started. Do all this in advance. When it's time to serve them, take them out about 10 mins ahead of time so the peels can thaw a bit.

Guests like 'em because they're clever & cute and the orange rind adds nice flavor to the filling, I like 'em because they're no-cook (though not no-fail... if you try this for the first time, get at least one extra orange). The mangled orange fruit can be used in smoothies or whatever.

Shelves & drawers

Lack of kitchen storage space is a problem in so many houses! My mother re-did our kitchen and the architect was flabbergasted at how many cabinets and drawers she wanted, but they are all filled (some might say over-filled).
My weekend goal (for the third weekend in a row) is to build shelves and other storage stuff in my place.
You could get HLM to do the same, since he is so good with wood. Done right, they can even move with you when you find a new place.

Storage is KEY

I'm a pack rat. Without storage my place would be a pit.

BTW, loving that dessert idea. I shall definitely be trying it.

Oh, I am with you on that one.

If...no WHEN I get everything cleaned up, I will be a happy, happy person. Happy and disoriented..."Now where did I put that...it used to be to the right of that Velvet Elvis lamp..." :)
