looks like we're going to be homeowners.

This morning at 10:00, after yet another night of lousy dreams, we met a structural engineer at the condo. He said the porches were pretty well okay structurally... technically... but had definite esthetic problems. We talked about how to fix/change some of those things w/o affecting the neighbors, and that is partially possible, which is good. Yayyyy! No full-blown replacement of the porch stack, no convincing neighbors to pay tons of money. *whew* In a similar fashion, the cracked main beam is ugly, and has some supports not up to code, but is doing just fine structurally. <doin' the ugly beam dance> :)

So, we called our realtor and talked about pricing. We considered offering 10K off, and our realtor really thought that was too much (shhhh, don't tell, but I thought that too), and he said if we offered 6K off he would encourage the seller to take the deal. Apparently the seller balked but eventually said okay. So that's that--we will buy this place, and we'll buy it for $319,000. The seller in the meantime is also replacing the hot water heater... damn, I hope he doesn't do a cheap-ass job because he hates us for bargaining. Perhaps we should offer to chip in on that.

What's next is telling my lawyer the price, and getting my banker to agree to let us close quickly, in January, so we have a sliver of a chance at replacing ourselves at our current apt before spring term begins at all the local colleges. We sign the purchase & sale agreement on Monday. And uhhhhh, yeah, that's all I know right now. Maybe now I'll be able to start eating & sleeping properly again... not that I feel calm just yet. No, not at all.

Funny, btw, that [livejournal.com profile] bluechromis mentioned joining extra gyms as being financial stupidity... I just noticed this weekend that my time at my Arlington gym will be over as of January 19, and I'm not at all sure I'll have the money to rejoin right away. :( This condo thing better fucking be worth it... I love my Sundays there! Maybe I should just cave in and sign on for 3 years with the evil but oh-so-close Bally's. It would be cheap, and I wouldn't have to wait for the bus anymore, but I know I would feel the compromise befouling my soul. Errrrrgh. I'll worry about this in January, I guess.

I won't tempt the jinxing fates by commenting on the big news...but the gym thing is really sad! Bally's is cheap, but is annoying. So convenient though...

Hmm. It's cheap for what you get. Monthly for alums is $70, which isn't cheap unless you consider that you get pool and squash and sailing and tennis blah blah blah, or you can buy 6mo or a year memberships that bring the price down a lot...I think it worked out to under $40/month if you went the year route, but of course that's a chunk of up front money. Also, access to all the facilities is included (including the sailing pavilion etc) but classes are not. I have zero complaints with it, other than that it takes me 45 min. to get there if there's any traffic, and that's just too long when I'm having motivational issues to begin with.
