Mmmm, passivity
May. 23rd, 2004 01:50 pmI've indulged in a lot of passive entertainment this weekend. On Friday night HLM took me to see the Paul Taylor dance company, which was pretty amazing. I was staring at the dancers' beautiful bodies with definite appreciation, but at the same time thinking wow, every single one of those people has a master's degree in dance. And they've all got all this memorized. Geez, I could never do that..
On Saturday we went to see Super Size Me, the documentary of a guy who ate nothing but McDonald's food for a month, which to my dismay informed me that cheese is addictive--at least, the casomorphins caused by the body's breakdown of casein are. Between that and all the graphic demonstrations in the movie involving refined sugar, I'm being a little bit paranoid about food now. Sigh. The funny thing is, Friday was the first day in ages that I actually ate no cheese the entire day, which is exceedingly rare for me. Oh yes, and I finished Oryx and Crake... funny, I hadn't known those were bird names.
The one productive thing I was planning to do this weekend--sand and repaint the porch railings--is suddenly on hold because the house's insurance company is telling us we have to make them taller to meet current codes for safety. Argh, that's going to take money away from the things that really need to be done... and takes away my little project too. I feel sluglike. Time to go work out, I guess. I did upper body as well as an hour of TKD yesterday, so I should be all set to do my legs without dying.

The three characters were well drawn and sufficient to the narrative, Oryx being especially intriguing (and letting Atwood get in a few extra points about the porn industry). The Crakers were touching and rather lovely, especially near the end when they started exhibiting humanity beyond what they were designed to. So, in the end, convincing? Not so much. A good read anyway? Yes, and also a quick one.
