Sometimes people remember

I talked briefly to a guy at the gym on Sunday (not in a hitting-on way, just "oh, I should do some of those" when I saw him doing shoulder dislocates). He told me he'd just been thinking about something I said months ago, that I'd probably forgotten I ever said it. But I did remember.
He had been training with S, a particular trainer at the gym, and S was commenting very loudly on people who come in and just do bodyweight excercises and never really get strong. "You called him on it, hardcore," said the guy. And I had, loudly snarking back "Yeah, body weight exercise sucks; that's why gymnasts are always so puny and weak."
Moderately rude yes, but I banter with the trainers there all the time so it wasn't wildly out of line. Also I was doing my pistol workout when S let loose that particular loudmouth bit of silliness, so he was rude first. Anyway, so fascinating -- someone remembered that, and thought about it. :D
Speaking of bodyweight exercises, I've been picking up a few new things from Your Body Is Your Barbell. It actually calls for using a fair amount of gym equipment, despite the "no gym" part of its subtitle, but has some decent stuff nonetheless. I'd recommend it to most people who like bodyweight training.

Date: 2015-10-07 03:45 am (UTC)Shoots, I've meet so many bros who can't do a single full extension pull up, let alone conquer pistols. Bodyweight combines strength, with flexibility and ROM. It's a beautiful thing.
I DO think squats/deadlifts should play into most people's workouts, but that is a side note.

Date: 2015-10-07 01:44 pm (UTC)What's your thinking on standard weighted squats with a bar? I kind of miss them, and the Ido Portal method has gone back to using them. So I'm thinking about adding those back in, too. (Part of this is that I'm getting bored with pistols after 4 years). My squats used to wipe me out, though.... how to mix them on leg day with bodyweight stuff is a puzzle. If I do pistols then squats my quads will be tired; if I do squats then pistols I suspect I'll have zero balance.
And I'm not realistically managing two leg days a week, right now, so it would have to be the same day.

Date: 2015-10-11 07:43 am (UTC)When my back bugs me sometimes, I will do front squats in a rack position. I can't do as much, but I've noticed it forces me to stay in a very upright position, and I feel I get good depth with it. Backsquats can force you to lean a bit forward (too much?) if you aren't careful with them.
I've done heavy squats and then done bodyweight squats afterwards. Not sure I could pull off pistols (as I need to stand on a box to do em still.) I say play around with them (squats) with a lighter weight for a bit and see how your legs feel afterwards? I am trying to get in one squat day, and one deadlift day a week if can.
